Happy Halloween!

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend full of fun and sugar :0) Here's what we did over the weekend:

Went bike riding since it finally wasn't raining...beautiful fall day on Thursday!

Played with Maggie, our dog, outside in the pretty weather.

Carved pumpkins.

Dressed up as Jessie from Toy Story 2 and went Trick-or-Treating (in the rain).

We also bought a house on Friday...so, not much going on around here :0) As a bonus, here's a picture my sister sent of the cutest little scarecrow I ever did see...my nephew Camp, in Birmingham. Sure wish I could have gotten my hands on him. We miss them so much!

I know, I know, he's adorable. Have a great week! We will be moving (for the second time in 6 months)...YAY!!!

New Friends

I was hesitant about signing Eden up for preschool with all the change she's had in the past few months. She seemed a little lonely without her Birmingham friends so I decided to go ahead and do it. Turns out it was a great thing for her. Her teacher said, "She is making friends so quickly!" That's my little social butterfly. "School is the BEST!" she announced after her 1st day. Here's Eden with some new friends. Aren't friends the best?

Kleenex Warning!!!

This song is so beautiful, and proof that God is real. Many of you may have heard it, but just in case, here it is. I found it on a friend's facebook and started bawling after the first line. Steven Curtis Chapman wrote it about his daughter, adopted from China, who died last year. The new album, Beauty Will Rise, comes out November 3rd. Get the kleenex, enjoy the song, and have 4 minutes of worship as you reflect on Jehovah Rapha, the God who heals. Don't forget to scroll to the bottom and pause my playlist before you play the video.

Eden Loves Candy Corn

This is going to be really short because I have a ton to do today. Eden started preschool 3 days a week and her Fall Festival is today. I decided to try and sew her a cute fall outfit, inspired by my friend Aimee's outfit featuring candy corn that she made for sweet Lily. Eden LOVES candy corn so we set off for Hobby Lobby to see what we could find. Here's how it turned out. Love yall!

And you know the best part? I only threw one fit this time while sewing :0)

Fall Pictures...and Pumpkins!

Hello all my friends in the blog world! Hope you are enjoying cooler weather where you are. We finally are in Georgia, but it's been really, really wet. We're hoping the sun comes out soon. Just thought I'd share some pictures from this fall. Eden and I went to Burt's Pumpkin Farm at the foothills of the North Georgia mountains with our good friend Jeanie yesterday. She is our Executive Pastor's wife and someone we love dearly. We are so glad to have the Herndon's in our lives. Jeanie is also my nephew Camp's Nana (my sister Kelly is married to her son, Matt). We LOVED the pumpkin farm! We had plans to go pick apples in this same area in Elliejay today, but the weather didn't cooperate...guess we'll have to make homemade apple sauce another day :0(

I love this time of year with fall colors, apple cider, Pumpkin Spice lattes at Starbuck's, and of course, college football! Hope you are finding lots to be thankful for this season. Hope you enjoy the pictures!

Princess for A Day

While we were on vacation at Disney World we paid a visit to the Bibbidy Boppidy Boutique located in Cinderella's Castle in Magic Kingdom. As we were escorted in, "Princess Eden" was first asked to select her dress, shoes and accessories. She chose the new Disney Princess, Princess Tiana, who is the first African American princess. The movie comes out in November and the dress is so pretty! She chose "glass" slippers from the Cinderella costume, and the floral ring headpiece from Tinkerbell...so we had 3 different costumes in one. That's okay, it was Princess Eden's night.

Then, she was escorted to her "royal" dressing room by a fairy godmother. We walked up to a closed curtain and the godmother said, "Bibbidy, Boppidy, Boo!" as she swept open the curtain...and there hung Eden's princess clothes she had chosen.

After getting dressed, her fairy godmother led her to the salon where she received a makeover complete with nails, makeup, and pixie dust in her hair (we opted out of the hairstyle, which involved hairpieces that would have looked ridiculous on our preschool Asian child). The entire makeover was done with Princess Eden's back to the mirror.

Finally, the fairy godmother counted "one, two, three..." and spun the chair around for the unveiling. And there she was, Princess Eden grinning from ear to ear, all dressed up and girly. It was so precious. She left the Boutique with a pink bag filled with makeup and hair accessories.

Next we proceeded over to the Emporium for a photo shoot (which was included with our photo pass we bought). There were lots of cheesy princess poses that somehow Eden managed to make look precious.

To top off the night, we ate dinner in Cinderella's Castle, where we got to meet and have our picture taken with Cinderella on the way in.

It was definitely an expensive night, but so worth it. Thanks to Disney for making it possible with the free dining plan special they had that we took full advantage of. Eden was the perfect age to enjoy the make-believe. Here are some photos of the night. Hope you enjoy!

Meeting Cinderella

Eden and her prince...daddy

I love Eden's relationship with Gene. He is such a wonderful father to her. I know the time he spends with her now will make such a difference in her life forever...oh how little girls need their daddy!

Disney World was great, but more than anything, I cherish the memories we made that I know will last a lifetime. Several times I would just watch Eden taking it all in, having the time of her life, and I would think...this child used to have no family...look what God has done. Not because she was at Disney World, but because of the moments of pure joy the three of us had. Deep in my heart and soul I long for every child on this planet to have moments of pure joy with a family. Lord, please use me to help make that happen! Let us never become so focused on how you've blessed our own families that we forget millions who have no family. Break our hearts for them, Lord!

Fun Around the House

Hey everyone! Just wanted to do a quick update. We've been having fun around the house the last 2 weeks. Here are some cute pictures of Eden's ever-expanding imagination and silly, precious personality...

Our sweet dog, Maggie, is the ever-faithful playmate...we need siblings! Eden tucked her in for a nap!

"May I take your order, please?" Playing restaurant.

"Look, mommy. I did my makeup all by myself."

Yesterday I mentioned Maggie wasn't acting like she felt good. Eden disappeared for a minute and returned with her doctor kit to check things out. Maggie got a thorough exam. "She's running a fever," Eden reported.

See the little "ice pack" on Maggie's head? Apparently she had a headache, too.

Her heartbeat was fine, though.

My brother-in-law sent these pictures of my nephew, Camp. He is 7 months old and he has 6 teeth!!! Can you believe that? Apparently, he LOVES blueberries and the water!

Last but not least, we are leaving Friday to go out of town for a week. Guess where we're going?????

DISNEY WORLD!!!!!!

We can't wait! Eden loves all things princess...so it's sure to be a memory we will never forget. We may post while we're there if we have time. Have a great week!

Evidence...

My dad and step-mom have a house in North Carolina, and this past Friday we went to visit them there for the first time. My dad loaded us all up in his gator and we set off up this BUMPY road. As we neared the top, my dad said, "Keri, you aren't going to believe this..." As we broke through the woods and rounded the top of the climb, the view took my breath away...I seriously had tears in my eyes. Incredible. Majestic. Perfect.

"God thought this up," I thought to myself. He spoke it into existence out of nothing. He imagined it, spoke it, and out of nothing there was this...think about that. Really think about it.

And this is the same God who imagined you and made you. He fashioned every fiber of your being with His own hands. He knit you together in your mother's womb (Psalm 139). He knows each word you will say before you say it. When I really allow myself to think about these truths, it is almost too much for me. The same God who made outer space made me...and loves me...it's unbelievable really.

And yet it is true. It has to be. How else can we explain it? A big blast? It's silly, really...laughable. It had to be Him. Only He is great enough.

So whatever you may be facing, stop for a minute and think about the evidence of God's presence in your life. He is real, and near, and faithful. And He is good...so very, very good.

I am going to close this post with a video I took on my camera in South Africa of my new friends, Elizabeth and Elyse, singing in their language. At the end of the song, they sing it in English. The song says, "There is no one like You, Jesus. No one like You. You are the King of kings." Enjoy! And remember to scroll to the bottom of the blog and pause the music player to hear the video. Love you all!

Make A Joyful Noise...

Gene got this video of Eden last night playing the piano and singing. It warms my heart every time I hear her sing about Jesus...knowing that she likely never would have known these songs if she grew up an orphan in China. And just the joy of her being a little girl. Every child deserves that chance...

Make sure to scroll down to the very bottom of the blog and pause the music player before you play the video. Enjoy!

Christina

The Bus Stop outside the squatter camp.

Okay, back to my South Africa mission trip. In my last Africa post I introduced you to Esther's neighbors to the left. Now, meet her neighbor to the right...Christina, a 79-year-old widow who lives alone. She can hardly walk, even with her walker.

Christina has no running water, no stove, no electricity or plumbing, no bed (unless you count a make-shift one made from boxes and an armchair). She lives in a concrete block 2-room home. Christina is a trip, to say the least. She was our first stop every day on our journey through the Joe Slovo squatter camp. To put it kindly, the South African home-care workers we were with warned us that she was "moody."

Christina didn't look at us, greet us, or even come close to smiling at us when we arrived the first day. Her bones were hurting and she wanted some relief. When we explained through the translator that we weren't doctors, she rolled her eyes and shook her head as if to say, "A lot of help you will be!" I laughed at her response because honestly, I was wondering the same thing ...what do I possibly have to offer these people who need so much? I am just a stay-at-home mom with a public relations degree that I don't use.

Despite her exasperation, we proceeded with our visit. We did her dishes and cleaned her house while she waited outside. I looked in her cabinet for food and there was none...I mean NONE. There were 2 gourds in the corner on the floor so I asked the home care worker if we could prepare them for her. She said you boil them. Well, I can do that...I can go fetch water and make her some food. Then we discovered she had no stove, no pans, nothing. "How do you eat?" we asked her. She said she eats if her son brings her food and if he comes it's late at night. "Are you hungry?" I asked. She shook her head "yes." All I could do is leave her the lunch that had been given to me for that day. I gave her 1/2 sandwich and an orange. She sat in the sunshine and ate slowly, savoring each bite.

Next, we asked her if she wanted a bath. She did, but we had no warm water and it was cold that day (it's winter there). So one of our team members went in her home and just washed her arms and legs with a wet wipe and rubbed lotion on her. While they were alone in the house, Christina finally began to talk some and expressed her loneliness over and over. We promised to come back the next day.

The next day, we came prepared to give a "real" bath. The camp we stayed at had these water bottles that kept water warm that you could put in your sleeping bag at night. We filled one up with warm water before we left that morning for Christina's bath. When we arrived, the same team member, Rachel, went with Christina and gave her a good, long bath. Rachel said she just scrubbed and scrubbed. The water Rachel came out of the house with was dark brown with dirt...who knows how long it had been since she had a bath...how good must it have felt to be clean!

As we were leaving, Christina began to soften some and open up. She even asked for a Bible, even though she cannot read. She said she wanted to put it under her pillow at night.

On our last day, Christina was sitting outside waiting for us to arrive. I rubbed her shoulders and she relaxed and let me love on her. Rachel pulled out a Bible for her and read Scripture to her. We explained that this would be our last day. "Why?" she asked. We asked if we could take her photo. "Yes," she said..."but first let me go and change." We laughed...women are alike, aren't we? 30 MINUTES LATER (seriously) she came out in a new dress, and new scarf on her head, ready for the photo. Meet Christina, pictured here with our team-member Rachel:

She refused to smile in the picture...but we did get some smiles from her that last day. As we walked away, fighting tears, we looked back and Christina was holding her new Bible upside down, pretending to read it...what a sight that was.

"Lord," I prayed as we walked away, "Speak to her in her sleep as her head lays on Your Word. Reveal Yourself to her, Lord. I know You can."

Christina grabbed our hearts. The loneliness she tried to hide with her gruff exterior melted away easily if you just spent a little time loving on her. I will never forget rubbing her back in the South African sunshine, watching her close her eyes and relax into the massage. In a land of nothing, the littlest things make such a big difference...a hug, a smile, a back rub, a bath, 1/2 of a sandwich...can any of us claim we don't have this to give?

There are lots of "Go-Go's" (grandmothers in South Africa) and widows who I'm sure could use a back rub, or even just a visit...just a little love. Whether it's in Africa or Alabama, God says to care for the widows. And it's a beautiful moment when the scowl turns into a smile..

The Problem

"The core problem isn't the fact that we're lukewarm, halfhearted, or stagnant Christians. The crux of it all is why we are this way, and it is because we have an inaccurate view of God. We see Him as a benevolent Being who is satisfied when people manage to fit Him into their lives in some small way. We forget that God never had an identity crisis. He knows that He's great and deserves to be the center of our lives. Jesus came humbly as a servant, but He never begs us to give Him some small part of ourselves. He commands everything from His followers."
- From: Crazy Love by Francis Chan

You will see in the margin of the blog that I'm reading a book called "Crazy Love." This quote was in the preface...ouch. Not even in the "real" chapters. I think this quote is plenty to chew on for today. Another South Africa post coming tomorrow.

Until then, how much of you does He have? Let go of it all. Not only does He command it...He's worth it. That is what I'm learning...to give it all up...trusting that what He will give in return will be so much sweeter than anything I can grasp with my feeble hands. And what I hope to receive is not "things," but more of Him...and what could be better than that?

It's not easy...it's a journey I'm learning to take, slowly but surely...anyone want to come along?
